WGU celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child
October 11 is the International Day of the Girl Child. Recognising the significance of this Day, Women Graduates Union organised a program called ‘Revisiting the upbringing of the Girl Child’ at its Amy Rustomjee Hall at 4 pm. The program aimed to bring into focus the role of the girl child in the family and her contribution to the Society at large.

Mrs Nandita Singh, Chairperson of the Programs Committee and Vice-President of WGU welcomed the audience and the program began.

The special invitee and main speaker was Ms Piroj Wadia, well known, experienced journalist from the entertainment industry. She was ably supported by two persons associated with WGU – Mrs Achala Barmase, Office Administrator for the Hostel and Mrs Vatsala Thakur, Counsellor, with the Counselling and Guidance Centre. Led by Ms Wadia, the three speakers emphasised on the importance of educating the girl child and shared their experiences where mothers battled all odds to educate their daughters and how some of them are in successful careers today. Ms Wadia gave examples of women of substance like Mrs Shabana Azmi, Dr Mrs Kiran Bedi, Mrs Arundhati Bhattacharya, amongst others.

Educating the girl child was the hot topic for discussion and the mothers present in the audience whole heartedly supported the girls and their need to be educated.

The program was well attended with many mothers accompanying their children and a few fathers as well. Many senior members of the WGU found time to come for the program.

The program concluded with a well articulated Vote of Thanks by Mrs Tannaz Tarapore.
